Professor Xiao Changfa Wins the 4th National Award for Innovation Excellence

Recently, the 4th National Award for Innovation Excellence Commendation Conference was held in Beijing. Professor Xiao Changfa from the School of Textiles and Fashion at Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) was awarded the 4th National Award for Innovation Excellence for his outstanding contributions to the innovation and application of fiber materials. This marks the first breakthrough for SUES in this important category of science and technology awards.

The National Award for Innovation Excellence is a significant science and technology award established with the approval of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. It is selected once every three years and jointly organized by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council. It is one of the highest honors for scientific and technological workers in China, aiming to reward outstanding talents and teams who have made remarkable contributions to scientific and technological innovation, industrial upgrading, and major national needs. Currently, the National Award for Innovation Excellence has become an important part and supplement to the national science and technology award system, an organic link between national science and technology awards and major talent programs, and a science and technology talent award second only to the National Top Science and Technology Award.


Having worked in the field of fiber material innovation and application for many years, Professor Xiao Changfa leads a research team focusing on key areas such as the theory and engineering application of chemical fiber formation, hollow fiber manufacturing technology, and the development of functional fiber materials and textiles, achieving a series of original scientific research results. The team has overcome difficulties and tackled the key technologies and applications for the large-scale preparation of fluoropolymer fibers, breaking foreign monopolies. They invented a purification treatment technology based on super-oleophilic and hydrophobic hollow fiber membranes, achieving strong oil selectivity and high-efficiency impurity retention. They also pioneered the preparation technology for fiber-reinforced PE hollow fiber membranes internationally, with the comprehensive performance of the membrane products surpassing similar products both domestically and internationally.


This award is not only an authoritative recognition of the scientific research achievements of Professor Xiao Changfa and his team in recent years, which involved dedicated research and deep integration of industry, academia, and research, but also a landmark achievement for SUES in its commitment to the characteristic discipline of textiles and fashion and its in-depth research and construction in the field of new materials. The university will take this award as an opportunity to continuously strengthen the cultivation of scientific research talents, promote technological innovation based on the actual needs of the industry, and assist the independent and high-end development of the textile new materials industry.
